Origin and history

The building located at 3 rue Denfert-Rochereau in Périgueux is a 16th century civil building, typical of Renaissance urban architecture in Périgord. Its ground floor is distinguished by a curved door with a curved frame, flanked by two arches with also ground harpsichords, arranged symmetrically on both sides. These decorative elements, characteristic of the style of the period, bear witness to an aesthetic concern and a marked craftsmanship.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 8 June 1939, only the ground floor of the building (cadaster BK 348) is officially protected. This inscription highlights the heritage value of preserved architectural elements, although the overall condition of the building and its current use (housing, commerce or other) are not specified in the available sources. The location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), places the building in the center of Périgueux, in Dordogne.

The region of Périgueux, now integrated into New Aquitaine, was in the 16th century a dynamic crossroads between northern and southern influences, marked by the development of cities and the enrichment of a merchant bourgeoisie. The buildings of this period often reflect this prosperity, with facades worked to display the social status of their owners. Although the archives do not mention the sponsor or artisans of this building, its style suggests construction linked to this urban and economic boom.
