Origin and history

The building in Ornans, Doubs, dates from the first half of the 17th century. This building, typical of the civil architecture of the period, is distinguished by its integration into the city's urban fabric. Although its initial function is not specified, its conservation status has enabled its recognition as a Historic Monument.

The heritage interest of this building is reinforced by its link with Gustave Courbet, a 19th century realist painter. Indeed, the artist's workshop, integrated into this building, was protected by a registration order in 1990. This association between a historic site and an artistic figure gives the building dual value, both architectural and cultural.

The location of the building, at 24 Place Courbet (formerly Gustave Courbet Square), is attested by the Merimée and Monumentum bases. Geographical accuracy, assessed as "a priori satisfactory", makes it possible to clearly identify the site. The Insee code of the commune (25434) confirms its anchoring in the Doubs department, in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.

The protected elements are limited to Gustave Courbet's workshop and to the roof of the building body that houses it. This partial protection underlines the importance of preserving spaces directly related to the artist's life and work. No information is available on the accessibility of the site to the public or its current use (visits, rentals, accommodation).
