Origin and history

The 18th century building, located in Choisy-le-Roi, is a former presbytery designed in 1764 by Angel Jacques Gabriel, first architect of King Louis XV. The initial plans provided for three U-shaped buildings around common courses, including a presbytery, housing for vicars and sisters of Charity (with school). Only the presbytery was realized, the sisters building their house in the garden of the superintendency hotel. This project was part of a royal commission, as evidenced by the correspondence between Gabriel and intendant Hazon.

The building, covered with broken roofs and long sections, underwent major repairs in 1873 and 1900. The latter includes an interior ceramic decoration offered by Mr. Boulenger. In the 20th century, the building changed its vocation: it housed the perception around 1930, then became the seat of the union of initiative. Ranked a historic monument in 1978, it now belongs to the municipality of Choisy-le-Roi.

The architecture of the building reflects the sober and functional style of the religious buildings of the second half of the eighteenth century, marked by the influence of the Lights. The U-shaped arrangement, although partially realized, was intended to facilitate community life around the inner courtyards and the central well. Subsequent changes (repairs, change of use) reflect its adaptation to local needs, while preserving its historical character.

The location of the building, Place de l'Église-Saint-Louis-Saint-Nicolas, strengthens its anchoring in the urban and religious fabric of Choisy-le-Roi. Its protection as historical monuments underscores its heritage importance, linked to both its prestigious architect and its role in local history, from the Old Regime to the present day.
