Origin and history
The Lion Peugeot building, located 37 rue Cuvier in Montbéliard, was built in 1909 by architect Jean Walter for Peugeot Frères. This eclectic building, combining neoclassicism in the lower part and neogothic in the upper part, served as a showcase for Peugeot cars and cycles. Its imperial dome, covered with green Alsatian tiles, is surmounted by a girouette, while mascarons adorn its edges. The inscription "Lion Peugeot" and a bas-relief in sandstone representing a lion, made by ceramicist Alexandre Bigot, underline his connection with the company.
Ranked a historic monument since 27 January 1992, the building is also labeled "Twentieth Century Heritage". Its street façade and roofs are protected, reflecting its architectural and symbolic importance. Sponsored by brothers Pierre, Robert and Jules Peugeot, this building embodies the industrial development of the brand and the early talent of Jean Walter, considered his masterpiece of youth.
The interior and exterior decoration, including signed ceramic elements, and the 20th century's transformed front, testify to its evolution. The dome's coverage in green plumbing tiles and details like mascarons reinforce its unique character. Private property, it remains a symbol of the industrial and architectural heritage of Montbéliard and Franche-Comté.
