Origin and history
The building at 36 Rue Roussy in Nîmes dates from the last quarter of the 18th century. It is part of the subdivision of the Roussy enclosure, initiated in 1776, which gave birth to Roussy, Monjardin and their adjacent streets. The owners of the corner buildings were required to build a "round tower" and engrave the names of the streets in capital letters. This building consists of a corner house, an adjacent house and a larger one on Monjardin Street.
The angle in round turn presents cross-tables and split chains. The adjacent house has an arched door, adorned with splits and canned console pilasters decorated with foliage. These consoles support a straight balcony, the ironwork of which is exceptional: two large double frame panels, decorated with florets and volutes in C and S, complemented by symmetrical balusters. The gate and the balcony were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 28 October 1963.
The wrought iron decor, of great finesse, illustrates the 18th century craftsmanship. Sheet metal motifs, volutes and florets underline the aristocratic character of this urban architecture. The exact address, 36 Rue Roussy, corresponds to cadastre D 182 to 184, although GPS coordinates suggest an approximate location near. This monument reflects the aesthetic and urban requirements of the time, combining functionality and ornaments.
