Origin and history

The idea of a royal square and a uniform façade along the banks of the Garonne in Bordeaux has gradually materialised. In 1729, architect Jacques Gabriel proposed three projects, then built in 1731 the Quai de la Douane and its facades. This initial project, supported by intendant Claude Boucher, was validated in 1746 by the city's jurats. After Boucher's death, his successor, Aubert de Tourny, took over the project with Ange-Jacques Gabriel, son of Jacques.

The monumental perspective was completed in 1748, creating a homogeneous architectural ordinance between Place Royale (now Place de la Bourse) and the river. The facades, structured on the ground floor with arcades, two square floors and a Mansard attic, are decorated with slits and sculptures. Despite the disappearance of some wrought iron balconies, their original character remains thanks to the preserved frames and larmies. The arcades, partially altered by shops, bear witness to this urban ambition.

The building at 39 quai Richelieu is part of this protected complex. Its façade and roof have been inscribed in the Historical Monuments since 1951, illustrating the heritage of Gabriel and Tourny. The original project aimed to unify the image of the docks, symbolizing the prestige of Bordeaux in the 18th century, then major port of the kingdom. The current shops on the ground floor recall the historic commercial vocation of these spaces.
