Key figures
Jacques-Pascal Virebent - City architect
Designer of the building and urban programme.
Origin and history
The building located 10 aisles of the President-Roosevelt in Toulouse is a neoclassical building built between 1824 and 1834. It is part of an urban beautification program to structure Wilson Square and adjacent aisles, with 27 buildings aligned. Its façade is distinguished by arcades on the ground floor, rectangular windows on the floors, and a cornice highlighting the first level.
The architect Jacques-Pascal Virebent, responsible for the plans, designed a two-span building, where the windows on the first floor are decorated with false railings with balusters. A dattic band, pierced by two windows, crown elevation. This building, classified as a Historic Monument in 1974 for its facades and roofs, illustrates the Toulouse town planning of the 19th century, mixing functionality and neoclassical aesthetics.
The building opens directly on the street and participates in the architectural harmony of the whole, reflecting the hygienist and aesthetic ambitions of the time. Its inscription in the title of the Historical Monuments (Decree of 20 August 1974) specifically protects its external elements, witnesses to this urban heritage.
