Origin and history
The building located at 32 rue Saint-Philomene in Toulouse is a typical example of the Art Nouveau style, an architectural trend that developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Built around 1914, it is distinguished by its frames of doors and windows decorated with intertwined volutes, as well as by neat decorative ironwork. Although the architect remains anonymous, his work reflects the organic and asymmetric aesthetic characteristic of this period, mixing functionality and ornaments inspired by nature.
The access porch, initially embellished with an orange and green ceramic on the balusters, has partially lost this decorative element over time. Despite this alteration, the façade and roof, as well as the porch, pillars and gates of the entrance, were protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 2 July 1992. This official recognition underscores the heritage value of the building, a witness to Toulouse's urban and artistic boom in the early 20th century.
The location of the building in the Saint-Philomene district reflects the expansion of the city during the Belle Époque, a period marked by economic dynamism and infrastructure modernization. The buildings of that time, often intended for a rising bourgeoisie, incorporated technical and aesthetic innovations, such as electricity or elevators, while displaying a discreet luxury through refined architectural details. This building, though modest in size, embodies the aspirations of a changing society.
