Façade sur Cour : inscription by order of 30 July 1951
Origin and history
The building at 7 Chenebouterie Street, Puy-en-Velay, is a 16th-century civil building, remarkable for its spatial organization and preserved architectural elements. It consists of an inner courtyard accessible from the street through a corridor, framed by two bodies of buildings connected by arched galleries. These features, as well as the windows of the tower and adjacent building, demonstrate a homogeneous construction dating back to this period. The structure thus combines residential functions and, potentially, uses related to the trade or urban crafts of the period.
The six-storey polygonal tower is one of the most distinctive features of the building. Curved by a gable roof, it is one of the rare examples preserved of this type of old cover in the city. Inside, woodwork, hazelnuts and exposed beam ceilings illustrate the care given to decoration and comfort, reflecting the probably high social status of its occupants or sponsors. The inscription of the facades on courtyard under the title of Historic Monuments by order of 30 July 1951 underlines the heritage value of this ensemble, although its current access and contemporary uses (visit, rental, accommodation) are not specified in the available sources.
Puy-en-Velay, the major episcopal town of Velay, enjoyed a marked economic and religious dynamism in the 16th century, thanks in particular to the pilgrimage to Notre-Dame du Puy. The buildings of that time, like the one on Chenebouterie Street, are part of a dense urban fabric where houses, workshops and places of power are mixed. Their architecture, often organised around internal courtyards, met the security, storage and social representation needs of local elites, while adapting to the topographical constraints of a city built on a steep volcanic site.
