Statue of the Virgin with the Child and niche containing it, located on the façade of the building (Box BC 264): classification by order of 26 October 1972

Origin and history

The building at 30 Félix-Bablon Street in Chaumont (Haute-Marne) dates from the 1st quarter of the 17th century. This civil building, typical of the urban architecture of the period, is distinguished by its facade decorated with a niche housing a statue of the Virgin and Child. These decorative elements, characteristic of Marian devotion in French cities, were protected by a classification under the Historical Monuments in 1972.

The location of the building, in downtown Chaumont, reflects the town planning of the small towns of Champagne-Ardenne at the beginning of the seventeenth century. At that time, the facades of bourgeois or artisanal houses often incorporated religious elements, such as statues or niches, reflecting the influence of the Church in everyday life. The building, although partially documented, thus illustrates the local architectural and spiritual heritage.

Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, specify that only the statue of the Virgin with the Child and its niche are classified. The exact address, confirmed by GPS coordinates, places the building in a historical area of Chaumont, although the accuracy of the location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10). No information is provided on its current use (visit, accommodation, etc.).
