Origin and history
The building Les Arums, located at 33 rue du Champ-de-Mars in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, was built around 1900 by architect Octave Raquin. Originally, it housed a private college for young girls, the course of the bridesmaids Longuet. Its architecture is distinguished by a facade decorated with floral sculptures evoking arums, typical of the 1900 style, as well as an entrance hall decorated with mosaics. These elements, emblematic of Art Nouveau, contributed to its inscription as a Historical Monument in 1985.
The official protection specifically concerns the street façade and the entrance hall, including its mosaic pavement. The left side access (n°33) allows to admire this preserved decor. After its initial educational period, the building was reconverted to accommodate the Alfred de Musset Course, a free college still in operation. The location of the building, near the Champ-de-Mars, makes it a notable architectural testimony of Parisian urbanization at the turn of the 20th century.
The building also illustrates the evolution of private schools in Paris, often installed in buildings with neat architecture. The floral sculpture, a central element of its decoration, reflects the influence of natural motifs in the art of the time, while the mosaic of the hall reminds attention to details in public and semi-public spaces. The registration of the Historic Monuments in 1985 helped to preserve these features, while adapting the use of the site to contemporary needs.
