Origin and history

The building at 2 rue de la Fosse, at the corner of Rue de Guérande in Nantes, is a building whose origins may date back to the 15th century, but whose current structure dates mainly from the mid-17th century. It is distinguished by its wood-paned architecture and its interior painted decorations, made around 1650. These elements, as well as its facades and roofs, motivated its designation as historical monuments in 1993.

The building illustrates the architectural transformations of Nantes in the modern era, where half-timbered houses, typical of the Middle Ages, were often redesigned to suit the tastes and needs of the 17th and 18th centuries. The painted decorations preserved on the first floor testify to the importance attached to interior ornamentation in the bourgeois or merchant houses of this period, reflecting the economic dynamism of the city, major port on the Loire.

The inscription of the building by order of 5 October 1993 protected its most remarkable features, including facades, roofs and painted decorations on the first floor. This official recognition highlights the heritage value of the building, both for its architecture and for its history, linked to the urban evolution of Nantes. The site is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code INSEE 44109, confirming its anchoring in the Loire-Atlantique department and the Pays de la Loire region.
