Origin and history
The building, located at 21 rue Boissonade, in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, is known to house an 18th century wrought iron staircase ramp. This ramp was originally from the mansion of 28 Geoffroy-l'Asnier Street in the 4th arrondissement, where it was listed as a historical monument in 1928. Its move to the 14th arrondissement illustrates the practices of reusing the Parisian architectural heritage.
The ramp was officially declassified from historic monuments in 2008, marking the end of its protected status. Although the current building is not classified, it bears witness to the history of urban transformations in Paris, where decorative elements of former private hotels have been integrated into more recent buildings. No information is available about its architect or historic owners.
The 14th arrondissement, where this ramp is now located, developed late compared to the centre of Paris. In the 18th century, this area was still largely rural or occupied by suburbs, contrasting with the aristocratic districts of the Marais (like the 4th). Private hotels, symbols of prestige, were rare there, which makes this transfer of architectural element all the more noticeable.
