Origin and history

The building at 83 rue de la Tombe-Issoire (Paris 14e) was built in 1902 by architect Gustave Poiriez, simultaneously with adjacent workshops. The ensemble occupies a garden driveway of 1200 m2, 72 meters long, where ten workshops of sculptors (ground floor) and painters (floor) line up in northern facade. Materials, such as beams and glazing, would come from the Universal Exhibition of 1900, with exposed brick walls.

Originally, artists worked there only on an ad hoc basis, but their families gradually settled there. Access to the workshops on the first floor is via four stairs, each serving two levels. The central driveway, bordered by a garden, now retains its original layout. The facades, roofs, stairs, and floor of the plot have been protected since a decree of 2016.

The building illustrates the adaptation of light industrial spaces (artist workshops) in Haussmann Paris, combining housing and work. Its exceptional state of conservation, including a bicycle shed and intact common areas, makes it a rare testimony to the utilitarian architecture of the early 20th century. The approximate location (81C rue de la Tombe-Issoire) and the sources (Monumentum, base Mérimée) confirm its anchoring in the Parisian heritage.
