Origin and history

The building located at 39 rue des Petits-Champs, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, is an architectural testimony of the late eighteenth century, marked by the revolutionary period. Its facade, characteristic of this era, contrasts with its interior decorations in the Directoire style, reflecting the aesthetic and political transitions of post-revolutionary France. The building was completed in 1809 by the father of Jean-Baptiste Corot, a famous landscape painter who lived there in the 1850s.

By the beginning of the 19th century, the building had been home to textile craftsmen, an activity that continues to exist today. This artisanal continuity underlines the sustainable economic role of some Parisian neighbourhoods, despite urban transformations. The facades and roofs, as well as the interior decorations, were protected by a registration order in 1992, recognizing their heritage value.

The location of the building, in a central district of Paris, makes it a representative example of Haussmannian urban planning before the hour, where coexist artistic history, industrial memory and architectural preservation. Private property, it also illustrates the challenges of heritage conservation in a dense and constantly changing urban context.
