Origin and history

The building at 14 rue de Gramont, in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, dates from the last quarter of the 18th century. This building illustrates the civil architecture of the late Old Regime, a period marked by a refinement of the facades and a rational organization of urban spaces. Its protected elements – facades on street and courtyard, as well as the corresponding roofs – were inscribed by ministerial decree in 1977, highlighting their heritage value.

In Paris, in the 18th century, the related buildings like this reflected the rise of an affluent bourgeoisie and the densification of the urban fabric. These buildings, often intended for rental, combined neat facade decorations and optimized interior distributions. Their preservation today bears witness to the evolution of architectural practices and the social status of the Parisian habitat before the Revolution.

The location of the building, in a central district, suggests its integration into a rapidly changing neighbourhood, where commercial, craft and residential activities were involved. The registration of the Historical Monuments in 1977 served to preserve its authenticity, despite the subsequent transformations of the capital. No information is available on any owners or architects associated with its construction.
