Origin and history
The building at 28 rue des Gras in Clermont-Ferrand, dating from the 17th century, is distinguished by its preserved architecture, typical of Old Clermont. Its entrance gives access to a arched corridor, rhythmized by broken arches, leading to a rectangular inner courtyard. This historical passage, with medieval appearances, contrasts with the classical rigour of the period.
The courtyard houses a stone staircase of Volvic, an emblematic local volcanic material, characterized by straight climbs with direct returns and intermediate bearings. The ramp, adorned with quadrangular balusters, and the arches in basket cove on the ground floor – one of which leads to a well – illustrate the constructive ingenuity of the time. This staircase, listed in the 1987 inventory of Historic Monuments, is one of the few intact examples of this type in the city.
The building reflects the 17th century Clermontian urbanization, where the interior courtyards and galleries served both as places of life and traffic. The preservation of these elements, despite subsequent transformations, offers a valuable testimony to the construction techniques and the spatial organization of bourgeois or artisanal dwellings of the Ancien Régime. The Creative Commons Associate Photo License (Basvb) highlights its shared heritage interest.
The exact address, confirmed by the Merimée base and GPS coordinates, places the building in the historic area of Clermont-Ferrand, near other Volvic stone buildings. The cartographic accuracy, noted as "passable" (5/10), calls for additional checks for an exact location. However, there is no indication of its current use (visit, dwelling, etc.), except for the partial protection of its stairwell.
