Origin and history
This building, located at 3 rue Paul-Leblanc in Clermont-Ferrand, dates from the 18th century. Although its facades do not have significant architectural elements, it is distinguished by a stairwell decorated with a wrought iron ramp. This decor, composed of interlaced curves and jewels, bears witness to the know-how of the artisans of the time. The building was partially protected by an order of 23 March 1990, specifically covering the stairwell and its corresponding roof.
The location of the building, in the centre of Clermont-Ferrand, reflects the typical urban planning of the 18th-century French cities, where bourgeois buildings multiplied. At that time, the city, then capital of the Auvergne, was a dynamic administrative and commercial centre. The buildings of this period, often austere in facades, sometimes hid richly decorated interiors, as this example shows.
The inclusion of the ironware ramp as part of the Historic Monuments underscores its heritage interest. This type of element, although discreet, illustrates the importance attached to art crafts in civil architecture. The 1990 protection aims to preserve this heritage, often threatened by modern renovations. Today, the building remains a testimony of 18th-century domestic architecture in Auvergne.
