Loggia staircase overlooking the inner courtyard (IL 136): inscription by order of 30 September 1991
Origin and history
The building located at 12 Savaron Street in Clermont-Ferrand is a 17th century building, representative of the civil architecture of this period in the region. It is distinguished by an inner courtyard separated from the street by a fence wall pierced by a pedestrian door with two vants. This space leads to a staircase turning right, with a core wall perpendicular to the bearings. The latter open in loggias on the courtyard, an elegant and functional architectural device.
The loggias are covered with slabs worn by low front arches and protected by a three-span balustrade, each composed of four pear-shaped square balusters. This baluster model, on the almost right side, was common in Clermont-Ferrand in the 17th century. Together, with its full arches and its impressive mouldings, illustrates the know-how of the local artisans of the time. The stairway and its loggias were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 30 September 1991.
The location of the building, originally referenced at 12 rue Savaron, seems approximate, with a map accuracy considered fair (note of 5/10). GPS coordinates suggest a close address at 15 rue Massillon. This shift reflects the challenges of precise geolocation for some old buildings, whose cadastral or toponymic references have evolved over the centuries.
