Origin and history

This building, erected in 1933 by architect Ernest Pincot, embodies the climax of the Art Deco style in Auvergne. Its construction on a narrow, pentue triangular plot inspired overhang and ressault facades, creating a dynamic visual effect. The use of a massive base contrasts with the lightness of the narrow bays, emphasized by vertical mouldings, while the rounded angle reinforces the harmony of the whole. These architectural choices, combined with a roof terrace decorated with an openwork concrete railing and geometric ceramics, make this building an emblematic achievement of its time.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 2004, the building is distinguished by its bold integration into the urban landscape of Clermont-Ferrand. The treatment of materials, such as ceramic inlays, and the geometric rigor of motifs reflect the influence of the artistic movements of the 1930s. The accuracy of its location, although considered mediocre (note 5/10), does not alter its heritage value, reinforced by its inclusion in the additional inventory. The official address, 33 rue Montlosier, makes it a landmark of local heritage, testifying to the know-how of Ernest Pincot and the rise of Art Deco in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

The building also illustrates the technical challenges of its time, with a structure adapted to complex terrain. The overhanging facades, rare in the residential architecture of the period, show a mastery of topographic constraints. The concrete railing, both functional and decorative, symbolizes the innovation of industrial materials in the architecture of the 1930s. Finally, his status as a protected monument underscores his importance in the urban history of Clermont-Ferrand, where he meets other achievements of the same period, less accomplished or preserved.
