Origin and history

The two buildings occupy the location of old houses visible on the earth floor of the Abbey of Ainay in the 18th century. Their construction is the result of an urban initiative marked by bourgeois residential architecture of the time. These buildings, erected in 1766, reflect the social and economic transformations of Lyon, where elites invested in report buildings to generate rental income.

In 1766 Jean-Pierre Delglas, adviser to the king and treasurer of France, built these two buildings on the plans of architect Pierre Gabriel Bugniet. Their neoclassical design is distinguished by a unified facade on street, masking two main houses connected by narrow bodies. The rectangular courtyards, served by cochère aisles, provide access to four symmetrical stairs, while light wells illuminate floors divided into double apartments.

The facades and roofs overlooking Rue du Plat and the Tilsitt wharf, as well as the courtyard with its elevations and stairs, were protected by a registration order in 2006. These architectural elements bear witness to the ingenuity of the 18th century Lyon urban developments, combining functionality and aesthetics. Today, the building belongs to a private company, without information available on its accessibility to the public.
