Origin and history
The building located at 1, Grand Marchaux Street in Autun is an old charcuterie built in the first quarter of the 20th century. Its Art Nouveau-style façade is distinguished by its rounded shapes, carved pilasters and ironwork railings representing stylized thistles. The inscription in a banner and the symmetry of the windows combine classical influences and modernity, typical of this period of architectural transition.
The façade was listed as historic monuments by order of 27 September 1995, recognizing its heritage value. Originally, the trade was a charcuterie, then a horse slaughter, as evidenced by a horse head above the door, stolen after 1995. The decorative details, such as the whipping patterns of thistles, illustrate the art crafts of the time.
The building is part of the urban landscape of Autun, alongside other remarkable buildings such as the wooden house of No. 23 or the statue of the Virgin with Child on No. 37 of the same street. Owned by the municipality, it reflects the local commercial and craft history, while embodying the Art Nouveau movement in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
