Origin and history

The hotel at 22 rue Geoffroy-l'Asnier is a Parisian mansion from the 3rd quarter of the 17th century, located in the 4th arrondissement. Its history is marked by influential owners: first inhabited by Jehan Hennequin (1549), then by the advisers of King Pierre Pousspin de Belair (1633) and Dreux Pousspin (1636). The present building owes its structure to Jean Rousseau, quarterman of Paris, who had it rebuilt in 1668 with a typical organisation between courtyard and garden. The carved doors (on street and courtyard) were the first protected elements since 1926, followed by an extension of protection in 1928.

The hotel's architecture is structured around three buildings, two courtyards and a garden. The main building, between courtyard and garden, illustrates the emerging classical style. Threatened by demolition on several occasions, the whole was preserved thanks to its progressive classification: the facades, courtyard floors, kiosk, stairs and wheel-hunters were protected in 2020, before a complete classification on 8 November 2021. The work of 1668 already included interior fittings such as the "restoration of the plastic coats", reflecting a careful decoration.

The successive protections highlight the hotel's heritage value. As early as 1926, the carved wooden doors were inscribed in the Historical Monuments, then the protection extended in 2020 to structural elements (paved passages, fronts on courtyard, garden) and finally in 2021 with a classification covering all the spaces, including the three old stairwells and the garden kiosk. These measures reflect the importance of this witness to urban planning in Paris under Louis XIV, where private hotels embodied the prestige of their owners, often linked to the court or royal administration.
