Origin and history

The building 14 Place Belliard in Fontenay-le-Comte is an example of civil architecture from the late 16th or early 17th century. Its structure, with a two-paned tile roof and a covered staircase with a slate pavilion, reflects the constructive techniques of the time. The chimneys, which were rebuilt in the 18th century, show further modernization, while the historic name of the house, the Pelican, suggests a marked local identity.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of August 9, 1942, this building is distinguished by its facade and roof, protected for their heritage value. Its location in the city centre, on an emblematic square, and its state of conservation (noted 7/10 for the accuracy of its location) make it an architectural witness to the urban transformations of Fontenay-le-Comte between Renaissance and modern times.

Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, point to its membership in a set of nearby houses built during the same period. Although the past uses (housing, commerce, etc.) are not detailed, its inscription in the title of historical monuments guarantees its preservation as a built heritage representative of the region Pays de la Loire.
