Origin and history

The building of Fontenay-le-Comte, built in the early seventeenth century according to comparative stylistic criteria with neighbouring houses dated 1605 and 1608, consists of two aligned houses. The front house, overlooking the street, has a long-paned roof and a basement today filled, while the back house is covered with a roof to a section. These architectural elements reflect the local construction techniques of the modern era.

The owner of this building is identified as the merchant Paul Jounot, mentioned in contemporary notarial acts. The house, initially attached to the fief of the Petit-Puisec under the Old Regime, underwent major modifications in the 18th and 19th centuries: redesign of several chimneys, then replacing the original staircase (probably in screws) with an interior staircase in frame. These changes illustrate the adaptation of the building to the changing needs of its occupants.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 9 August 1942, the building is protected for its facade and roof, testifying to its heritage importance. Located in 18 Place Belliard, its location in the city centre of Fontenay-le-Comte (Vendée) makes it a representative example of the civil architecture of the late Renaissance in the Pays de la Loire. The accuracy of its location is estimated as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10).
