Origin and history

The Fontenay-le-Comte building, built around 1608, illustrates the civil architecture of the late 16th century. Its peculiarity lies in its cover: a two-sided roof for the front part and a roof with a side for the rear. The staircase, originally outside, was integrated after the construction of a day well, probably in the 19th century. One chimney is dated 1607, while others were redone in the 18th century.

This building was commissioned by prosecutor Jacques Gouin and realized by master mason Ambrose Bienvenu, assisted by Mathieu Norin and Julien Brunet, two other local masons. In June 1608 Gouin consulted his neighbours for the creation of a covered passage, authorized by the treasurers general. Under the Ancien Régime, the house depended on the fief of the Petit-Puisec, which is evidence of its importance in the urban fabric of the time.

Ranked by order of 29 October 1942, this building is located at 24 Place Belliard, in the Vendée department. Its state of conservation and architectural characteristics make it a notable example of the Renaissance heritage in Pays de la Loire.
