The cellar or lower room (cad. BT 187): inscription by decree of 27 December 1972
Origin and history
The building at 66 rue Thénard in Sens is a 13th century building, typical of Burgundian medieval civil architecture. Its particularity lies in its cellar or lower room, protected by a decree of inscription under the title of Historical Monuments since 27 December 1972. This underground section, referenced under the BT 187 cadastre, illustrates the techniques of building and developing storage spaces in the Middle Ages.
The location of the building, in the historic centre of Sens, reflects the urban importance of the city at that time. Sens, then under episcopal and commercial influence, saw the development of houses combining residential and economic functions. The vaulted cellars, like that of this building, were often used to preserve food and goods, testifying to the artisanal and merchant dynamism of medieval Burgundy.
Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm the exact address and partial protection of the building. Although the approximate GPS address (15 Rue des 3 Croissants) differs slightly from the official address, these data highlight the heritage interest of the site. The location accuracy, assessed at 5/10, invites further verifications for further study.
