Origin and history

The buildings at 91, 93 and 95 rue de Richelieu, in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, occupy the location of a mansion built in 1706 by the architect Cartault for financial Pierre Crozat. The latter, a major financial figure under Louis XIV, donated it in 1740 to his nephew François Crozat, thus perpetuating his family heritage in this booming neighbourhood.

Upon the death of François Crozat in 1754, the hotel returned to his second daughter, wife of the future Duke of Choiseul, influential minister of Louis XV. After 1780, the estate was divided and sold to an insurance company, which built in 1788 a set of 47 houses, marking the transformation of the site into a residential and commercial area. The facades and roofs on the street, witness to this history, were inscribed in the Historical Monuments in 1975.

The exact address, 91-95 rue de Richelieu, corresponds to the Insee code 75102 of Paris, in the Île-de-France region. The GPS location, although quite precise (level 5/10), makes it possible to identify this sector as a characteristic example of Parisian urbanism of the eighteenth century, where the aristocracy and the rising bourgeoisie coexisted in private hotels before their division into report buildings.
