Origin and history
Jeanne-d'Arc Street in Orléans is distinguished by its alignment of buildings built according to a municipal ordinance fixing their layout and dimensions. The cornices, bandages and facades, although varied in architecture, respect a common ladder to create visual harmony. The aim of this uniformity was to highlight the neighbouring cathedral, highlighting the urban and symbolic importance of this axis.
The facades and roofs of these buildings were protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 23 January 1945. This classification recognizes their heritage value, linked to their architectural coherence and their role in the beautification of the city centre. Their precise location, at 34 rue Jeanne-d'Arc, is documented in the Mérimée base, although geographical accuracy is considered poor (note of 5/10).
The ensemble reflects a municipal desire for urban planning, rare for the time, where collective aesthetics predominated over individual initiatives. No information is available on original architects or owners, but the ordinance suggests strong intervention by local authorities. The buildings, still visible today, bear witness to this coordinated approach to building, typical of the projects of beautification of the city centres at the turn of the twentieth century.
