Origin and history

The printing house of the newspaper Le Démocrate de l'Aisne was founded in 1906 in Vervins (Aisne) by Pascal Ceccaldi, a local politician, under the original name Le Démocrate vervinois. This daily, which became weekly, was a tool of rivalry against the Aisne Liberal, supported by his opponent, Dr Destin Dupuy. Ceccaldi, elected MP and President of the General Council of Aisne, used this newspaper to establish his political influence in the region.

The newspaper was interrupted twice: during the First World War (August 1914 to September 1919) and during the Second World War (May 1940 to September 1944). After Pascal Ceccaldi's death in 1918, his brother Antoine took over the direction of the newspaper, now his local anchor. The Ceccaldi family remained in charge until 1987, despite financial difficulties which almost led to its closure in 1988 and 1999. Since then, the Association Friends of the Democrat continues its existence.

Ranked a historic monument in June 2022, the printing house houses an exceptional set of early 20th century machines: a Duplex Buhler Frères (1924), linotypes and lead characters. In 2016, the Aisne Democrat was the last Western European newspaper still printed using these traditional techniques, with a circulation of 1,200 copies. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic (temporary suspension in 2020), it continues to appear every Thursday, sold €0.65 or by subscription.

The workshop, located at 2 Dusolon Street in Vervins, includes the entire printing shop, its buildings in return for square and its typographical material. Its inscription in historical monuments covers all machinery and premises, highlighting its unique heritage character. The newspaper also remains a legal advertising medium for the department of Aisne, thus combining administrative utility and historical preservation.
