Origin and history

The Prefecture Hotel of Isère, located in Place de Verdun in Grenoble, is a neoclassical building built between 1861 and 1866 under the direction of architect Charles-Auguste Questel. This project met a need for administrative modernization, with prefectural services previously sharing the premises of the hotel in Lesdiguières with the town hall. In 1857 the General Council rejected a first plan to rebuild prefecture and town hall near the town garden, finally opting for the Place d'Armes (now Verdun Square in 1870). Questel, assisted by J.-H. Riondel, integrated innovative metal structures for floors and frames, while adopting a 17th century style.

The façade, decorated with busts of Dauphinian personalities (Bayard, Lesdiguières, Barnave, etc.), reflects a desire to celebrate local history. The building was inaugurated in December 1866 by prefect Daniel Pastoureau. Partly listed as a historical monument in 1998, it combines sumptuous decorations (honor hall, gallery, staircase) and administrative function. The protected elements include the facades, the vestibule, the ballroom, and the honorary stairway, witnesses to the architectural ambition of the time.

The prefecture hotel remains a symbol of the departmental power, served today by the Grenobles public transport (tramway line A, bus). Its architecture, combining classical tradition and modern techniques, illustrates the transition between the Second Empire and the Third Republic. The engaged artists (sculptors Perrin and Delecole, painters Denuelle and Lenepveu) worked under the strict supervision of Questel, reduced to an executing role to guarantee the stylistic unity of the project.
