Origin and history

The Dolmen des Îles is a megalithic monument located in Voutré, in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. Dating from Neolithic, it bears witness to the funeral and architectural practices of this prehistoric period. The building, now in ruins, is composed of scattered stones, reflecting its state of degradation over the centuries.

Ranked under the title of historical monuments by decree of 15 February 1978, the dolmen is located at the place called Béziet, on a private property. Although access is restricted, there remains a notable example of the megalithic heritage of Mayenne, a region rich in similar sites. Its ranking underlines its archaeological and cultural importance.

Dolmens, like that of the Islands, were generally used as collective burials during Neolithic times. Their construction reflected a complex social organization, capable of mobilizing significant resources and labour. In the local context, these monuments were often integrated into sacred landscapes, marking the territory and memory of prehistoric communities.
