Origin and history

The Roman Way of La Turbie is a historical monument dating from Antiquity, located in the municipality of La Turbie, in the Alpes-Maritimes (region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur). This vestige includes fragments of the track itself as well as five miles, characteristic elements of Roman roads used to mark distances. These remains testify to the importance of road infrastructure in the territorial and logistical organization of the Roman Empire in Gaul.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 5 September 1922, the Roman Way of La Turbie is now owned by the municipality. Its location, although documented (in particular via an approximate address in Nice and an Insee code corresponding to La Turbie), remains imprecise according to the criteria of the Merimée database, with an accuracy estimated at 5/10. Protected elements specifically include track fragments and mileages, highlighting their heritage value.

Available sources, such as Monumentum, indicate that this monument is part of a wider network of Roman routes, essential for trade, military travel and provincial administration. Although little detail is provided on its specific use or exact layout, its ranking reflects its archaeological and historical importance for the understanding of Romanization in south-eastern France.
