Origin and history

The Manor House of Limoëlou, built in the 16th century in the district of Rothéneuf in Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine), is a rare example of Breton architecture for example for the malouinières. Acquired in 1541 by Jacques Cartier after his travels to Canada, he became his summer residence until his death in 1557. The explorer adds a floor and a wooden ship tower, setting up a room overlooking Saint-Malo Bay. The site, transformed into a 17th century farm, is now Cartier's only tangible vestige in its hometown.

Ranked a historic monument in 1940 and labeled Maisons des Illustres, the mansion was purchased in 1978 by the Macdonald Stewart Foundation. Restored in its original state, he opened in 1984 as a museum dedicated to Jacques Cartier, marking the 450th anniversary of the discovery of Canada. The pieces, furnished from the time, recount the life of the explorer and his role in the history of France-Quebec. The name Limoëlou (Breton bald terre) also inspired a Quebec quarter, in tribute to Cartier's wintering in 1535.

The museum highlights the links between Brittany and Quebec through exhibitions and cultural activities. The mansion, donated by the Stewart Foundation in Saint-Malo in 2012, preserves unique architectural elements such as the facade tower and maritime woodwork. Nearby, St. Vincent's Cathedral is home to Cartier's burial, while the Maison du Québec and Saint-Malo History Museum complement the local heritage offering.
