Origin and history
The garden of the house of Montcuit, classified as Historic Monument, was mentioned in the archives in 1639. It is part of the tradition of regular terraced gardens, characteristic of the seventeenth century. Its organization includes a first floor facing the house, an East moat serving as a pool, and a small bridge leading to a transition space between the large floor and the old vegetable garden. An exhedral wall, pierced by a staircase of seven steps, separates the latter from a large garden on the terrace, bordered by an alley of lime trees.
The garden is distinguished by its complex hydraulic network, including moats and canals, essential to its operation and aesthetics. The facilities protected by the 2008 decree include the garden plate, its moats, the vegetable garden, the orchard, an orangery, as well as two access aisles. These elements reflect a rigorous landscape design, combining utility and convenience, typical of the aristocratic gardens of the time.
The location of the garden, in the commune of Montcuit (Manche), is attested with satisfactory accuracy, according to the Mérimée base. Its approximate address, 5020 Frm du Chateau, and its Insee code (50340) place it in the former Basse-Normandie, now integrated into the Normandy region. Registration for the Historical Monuments in 2008 underscores its heritage value, both for its structures and for its preserved hydraulic system.
