Pierre Poivre - Botanist and colonial administrator Creator and owner of the garden.

Origin and history

Pierre Poivre's garden, located on the hillsides of Saint-Romain-au-Mont-d'Or overlooking the Saône, was created in the 18th century by botanist and colonial administrator Pierre Poivre (1719-1786). The latter acquired the land in 1758, and the garden was developed around 1760. The estate then consists of a regular garden, a cut wood and a Chinese garden, reflecting the various influences of its creator.

The garden is classified as Historic Monument by order of 20 January 2017, excluding the house and its outbuildings. Among the protected elements are the hydraulic network, a nymph with its sculptures, a circular basin, an old cave, and the remains of a cabinet of curiosity. These developments demonstrate the scientific and aesthetic importance of the place, conceived as both a botanical and a landscaped space.

Pierre Poivre, as a botanist, marked this garden with his imprint, integrating exotic elements and structures inspired by his travels. The site, now located at the place called "La Freta", preserves traces of these earthworks, retaining walls and masonry remains, which recall its history and past use. The exact address, 3 Chemin de l'Eperon, allows to locate this remarkable heritage of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
