Origin and history

The Chaufourg Gardens originated in the 19th century, when Libéral Lacombe and Amanda Dambier, owners of the site, created a park inspired by English gardens. This park is distinguished by its greenery, a maze, a gazebo and a buried watering system, reflecting the landscape tastes of the romantic era. These facilities are designed to harmonize nature and architecture, in a picturesque spirit typical of English gardens.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a courtyard dedicated to old climbing roses was added, enriching the botanical diversity of the site. However, it was in the 1960s that landscaper Tobie Loup de Vianne undertook a major renovation of the gardens. He designs exterior spaces as "rooms" in extension of the house, thus integrating the garden with domestic architecture. This modern approach contrasts with the 19th century legacy while preserving it.

The Chaufourg Gardens are finally recognized as a Historical Monument by a registration order on 2 November 2000. This protection applies specifically to cadastral plots AC 338 to 342 and AW 61, highlighting their heritage value. The site thus embodies a superposition of styles and eras, from English romanticism to 20th century landscape innovations, under the influence of masterpieces such as Jean Dive (architect) and Tobie Loup de Vianne.
