Origin and history

Cap Sciences is a Centre for Scientific, Technical and Industrial Culture (CCSTI) founded in 1995 in Bordeaux, on the banks of the Garonne. Its mission is to make science accessible to the general public through exhibitions, animations and interactive workshops. His first site, the Hangar 16, hosted the inaugural Aquitaine Terre d'Océan exhibition in April 1995, in partnership with the City of Sciences de la Villette.

In 1998, Cap Sciences expanded its activities with travelling exhibitions and activities for young people, such as Cap Sciences Juniors. That same year, he launched his website and collaborated with the House of Archaeology in Pessac. In 2002, the centre moved to Hangar 20, a building designed by Bordeaux architect Bernard Schweitzer, to meet its growing success.

Cap Sciences became international in 2005 with the exhibition Sur les traces de l'homme en Turkey. In 2007, he recorded a record influx for the Mammouths exhibition. Labeled Science and Culture, Innovation in 2008, he won the Diderot Prize in 2009 for the Clim'City project. Since 2011, he has been leading the Inmediats project to promote equal opportunities in access to science.

The centre actively participates in national events such as Science Day (since 1998), Research Night (since 2006) and European Museum Night (since 2014). In 2012, it hosted the international Lascaux exhibition, attracting 100,000 visitors. In 2013, he opened a Living Lab in partnership with Bordeaux laboratories to explore innovative technologies.

Cap Sciences is managed by an association law of 1901, led since 2018 by Didier Pourquery and operated by Raphaël Dupin since 2017. It employs about 50 people, including scientific mediators, and works with researchers to popularize science issues. As a member of AMCSTI and the ECSITE network, it is aimed at all audiences, from children to seniors, schools and tourists.
