Moines de l'abbaye de la Chaise-Dieu - Founders of the first church
In the 11th century, Benedictine origin
Origin and history
The chapel of Roc-Saint-Pierre, located in Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux in the department of Lozère, is a religious building built in the fourteenth century. It succeeds a first church founded in the 11th century by Benedictine monks of the Abbey of the Chair-God. Its architecture, although Romanesque, incorporates Gothic elements such as reamped bays and a broken arch.
The chapel presents a simple plan with a single nave, two vaulted spans in broken cradle, and a polygonal apse vaulted in cul-de-four. A stone staircase, today without use, testifies to the existence of a missing bell tower wall, probably destroyed during the Revolution. Inside, niches with flamboyant arc lintels recall late stylistic evolutions.
The building lost its parish function in 1846 when the parish was transferred to Vareilles. During recent work, stone sarcophagi, perhaps contemporaries of the first church, were discovered in the old cemetery. In 1986, the chapel became part of the commune.
The chapel illustrates local religious history, marked by the influence of Benedictine abbeys and medieval architectural transformations. Its gradual abandonment in the 19th century reflects the territorial recompositions of rural parishes in Lozère.
Today, the site preserves traces of its past, from Romanesque elements to Gothic additions, including the remains of the bell tower. These historical strata bear witness to the evolution of religious heritage in Occitanie.
