Origin and history

The Chapel of Chamole Castle, located in the Jura department (39), is a religious building dating from the 1st quarter of the 16th century. It has been classified as a Historical Monument since a decree of 11 July 1984, thus protecting its architectural and cultural heritage. Its exact location, 30 Rue de la Croix Rousse, is documented in the Merimée base, although the accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10).

This monument illustrates the importance of seigneurial or castral chapels in the rural territories of Burgundy-Franche-Comté in the Renaissance. At that time, castles and their religious outbuildings played a central role in the social and spiritual life of local communities. The chapels often served as a place of worship for the lords and their vassals, while symbolizing their power and piety.

Available data from Monumentum and the Merimée archives confirm its status as an ancient castle chapel, with precise cadastral references (parcelles A 331 and A 332). No additional information is provided on its architecture, sponsors or current use (visit, rental, etc.), except its registration as Historic Monuments.
