Origin and history

The Notre Dame d'Hortus Chapel is a religious building located 500 metres east of Ceyras, in the Herault department, in the Occitan region. Built in the second half of the 15th century, it is distinguished by its atypical architecture for the region: a rectangular building with foothills and an imposing porch consisting of two cylindrical batteries and two committed batteries. This porch, covered by three arches (two slightly low and one broken arch), supports a wooden frame. Inside, the chapel is divided into two almost equal parts by a crosswalk, and its cross vault, without apparent supports, falls directly into the masonry via ground caps.

The rarity of the porch chapels in the Hérault suggests a direct influence of the Saint-Benoît church of Montpellier, now a cathedral, although few examples remain today. This type of construction often reflected a desire to mark a place of popular devotion or a crossroads, while providing shelter for pilgrims or the faithful. The chapel was listed as historic monuments by order of 2 March 1939, recognizing its heritage and architectural value.

The monument today belongs to the municipality of Ceyras.
