Chapelle de Notre-Dame-de-Hal, in the hamlet of Baptiste: inscription by order of 19 December 1946

Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-de-Hal Chapel is a religious building located in the hamlet of Baptiste, on the commune of Marbaix, in the northern department. This monument, inscribed in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 19 December 1946, bears witness to a preserved local heritage. Its exact location, at 10bis Rue Baptiste, is documented in the Merimée base, although the accuracy of its geographical location varies according to the sources.

Chapels of this type, often linked to Marian cults or local traditions, played a central role in the community life of the villages of Hauts-de-France. In modern times, these buildings served as places of prayer, pilgrimage or gathering for the inhabitants of the hamlets and surrounding countryside. Their preservation, like that of Notre-Dame-de-Hal, reflects the people's attachment to their religious and architectural heritage, despite the evolution of cultural and social practices.
