Origin and history

Cajarc Castle is a former castle built in the 13th and 15th centuries, located in the municipality of Salvagnac-Cajarc (Aveyron, Occitanie). It illustrates medieval military architecture, with defensive elements such as round and square towers, a central dungeon, and a round path supported by mâchicoulis. The inner courtyard, framed by several houses, preserves traces of its residential and religious use, including a painted vaulted room and an old castral chapel that became a parish church.

The monument was the subject of two successive protections: an inscription in 1991 for the entire castle (outside classified parts), followed by a classification in 1994 for its most remarkable elements, such as the facades, the round tower with its stone staircase, the inner courtyard, and the room decorated with paintings. These protections highlight its heritage value, mixing medieval structures (thirteenth century dungeon) and Renaissance additions (windows, painted galleries). The interior decorations, especially the paintings of the seventeenth century, bear witness to continuous occupation and adaptations to the tastes of later eras.

The spatial organization of the castle reflects its dual defensive and seigneurial role. The square dungeon, the central point of the western facade, symbolizes feudal power, while the adorned galleries and stairs betray a desire for comfort and representation. The north tower, joined to the church, recalls the close link between temporal and spiritual power in the Middle Ages. Unified mâchicoulis suggest a major reconstruction or renovation in the second half of the 15th century, the pivotal period between the Hundred Years' War and the affirmation of royal authority in Rouergue.

Today, the castle of Cajarc remains a characteristic example of the castral architecture rouergate, where centuries of history overlap. Its classification as historical monuments makes it a protected site, while its location in an Occitan village strengthens its territorial anchor. The sources available (Wikipedia, Mérimée base) emphasize its architectural and artistic value, but also its role in local history, as evidenced by the transformation of its chapel into a parish church.
