Origin and history
Frensburg Castle () is a medieval building located in the municipality of Lembach, Lower Rhine. Mentioned for the first time in the 13th century, it is distinguished by its semi-troglodytic architecture, built on two rocks forming two distinct entities. A wheel used to transport supplies and materials to superstructures. This ingenious system reflects the technical adaptations of Vosges castles to their steep environment.
In the 15th century, the lords of Fleckenstein undertook a complete restoration of the castle, marking an important phase of its history. Today, although located on the GR53 hiking trail, the site is no longer accessible due to the deterioration of the access stairway. Ranked a historic monument since December 1898, it bears witness to Alsatian defensive heritage and local feudal dynamics.
The castle is part of a landscape marked by conflicts and alliances between Vosges lords. Its strategic location, between Niedersteinbach and Fleckenstein Pond, made it a point of control of the communication routes. The Vosges Club trail (marked with a blue rectangle) still allows to approach the remains, recalling its role in regional history.
