Origin and history

The castle of Noailly is a 15th century mansion located in the commune of Magnet, in the south-east of the department of Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This monument is located a few kilometres east of Saint-Germain-des-Fossés and is distinguished by its typical architecture of the late medieval era. It includes a body of rectangular houses flanked by a tower of stairs and two round towers, characteristic of the seigneurial buildings of this period.

The castle was listed as historical monuments by order of 8 May 1933. Today, partially in ruins, it preserves notable architectural elements, such as sill windows and indoor chimneys decorated with squid. These details reflect the social status of its former owners and the importance of the building in the local landscape. The building is also referenced in the Merimée base, reflecting its recognized heritage value.

From a historical point of view, the castle of Noailly illustrates the evolution of manor houses in Bourbonnais, an area marked by a strong seigneurial presence in the Middle Ages. These buildings served as both aristocratic residence and a symbol of power, while playing a role in the economic and social organization of the surrounding territories. Although the sources do not mention any specific historical characters related to this castle, its architecture and its inscription to historical monuments make it an important witness of this era.
