Origin and history
The castle of Candes, located in Saint-Michel in the Occitanie region, was built in the early 19th century, around 1815. It embodies the classical architectural spirit of the late eighteenth century, reflecting the taste of the era for clean lines and harmonious proportions. This monument was erected on the initiative of a rich family of grain traders, who also wanted to develop a large wine farm in this area.
The history of the castle is marked by two major crises: the phylloxera crisis, which devastated the French vineyards in the late 19th century, and the mismanagement of one of its owners. These events led to the ruin of the winery, putting an end to its golden age. Despite these setbacks, the castle has retained remarkable architectural elements, such as its facades and roofs, as well as outbuildings such as an orangery and a greenhouse.
Ranked a Historic Monument, Candes Castle was partially protected by order of 26 February 1997. This decree specifically concerns the facades and roofs of the castle, the rooms on the ground floor, as well as the facades and roofs of the orange and greenhouse. These measures are designed to preserve an architectural and historical heritage that is a witness to a time when agriculture and trading played a central role in the local economy.
