Jean Charles de Saint-Nectaire - Marquis and Lord Owner from 1713 to 1771

Origin and history

Didonne Castle is an 18th century building located in the municipality of Semussac, 10 km southeast of Royan. He succeeded the "Château de la Touche", which he took over. This historic site, integrated into a seigneurial estate, became the seat of the seigneury of Didonne after its acquisition in 1713.

In 1713, the Marquis Jean Charles de Saint-Nectaire bought the property and lived there until 1771. The castle, symbol of local power, remains a place marked by the aristocracy until its recent transformation. In 2019, a major renovation converted it into a ten-bedroom hotel, complemented by a restaurant, combining heritage and modernity.

The castle illustrates the evolution of seigneurial residences in New Aquitaine, moving from fortress to resort, then to tourist establishment. Its history reflects the social and economic changes in the region, from the Ancien Régime to the contemporary era.
