Origin and history
The castle of Espalungue stands at the distance of Laruns, on the right bank of the ossau gave, facing the district of Pon. Although the first mention of a lord of Espalungue dates back to the middle of the 12th century, the central core of the castle, identifiable by its plan and masonry, dates rather from the 13th century. This medieval heart consists of a hall and a tower, around which 17th century buildings came to add, changing their contours and openings. These additions have in particular loomed the original structures, integrating defensive and residential elements characteristic of the modern era.
The main house, rectangular in shape, is flanked by two distinct towers: a square tower at the north corner and a tower with a spiral staircase at the southwest corner. The chapel of the castle, consecrated in 1694, bears witness to this phase of transformation. Inside, there are remarkable elements such as a Renaissance fireplace, walnut panelling and painted canvases, reflecting the architectural refinement of past centuries. Together, including its outbuildings and terrace walls, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 4 March 2016, highlighting its heritage value.
The site, now owned by a private company, retains an isolated location, typical of Pyrenean castles designed to monitor valleys and control communication axes. Its hybrid architecture, mixing medieval and classical, illustrates the evolution of the defensive and residential needs of local lords, from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The 17th century changes, in particular, marked a transition to a more residential and less strictly military use, while preserving traces of the medieval origins of the place.
