Origin and history
The castle of Vico d'Ornano, located in Santa-Maria-Siche in Corsica, is an imposing house built in the 1st quarter of the 20th century. Although its construction dates from the early 20th century, its architecture is inspired by the large bourgeois houses of the second half of the 19th century. The building is distinguished by its three turrets of pepper-style corners, giving it the appearance of a "small castle", a rare style for residences of notables in Corsica.
The castle is home to interior decorations painted by Jean-Baptiste Bassoul, including a neo-pompian-style vestibule. Other rooms, such as the Renaissance-style dining room, the Louis XV-style living room and bedroom, as well as the Empire office, reflect the typical arrangements of 19th-century bourgeois houses. These elements underline the influence of continental artistic currents in Corsica at that time.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 10 May 2012, the castle is fully protected, including its interior decorations. Architect Bathélémy Maglioli and painter Jean-Baptiste Bassoul marked this monument, which illustrates the mix between local tradition and external stylistic influences.
