Origin and history

Notre-Dame de Sées Cathedral, originally dedicated to Saint Gervais and Saint Protais, is a Gothic building located in Orne, Normandy. Its history dates back to 440, when Saint Latuin, the first bishop of Sées, founded a first cathedral on the site of an ancient pagan temple. This primitive building, destroyed by Viking invasions in 878 or 910, was rebuilt by Azon the Venerable around 986 with stones from local fortifications. The cathedral suffered several destructions, notably in 1048 during arson ordered by Bishop Yves de Bellême, then in 1174 during the conflicts between Henry II and Louis VII.

The present cathedral was built from 1210, despite fragile foundations. The choir, chapels and transept, of radiant Gothic style, were completed in the early 14th century under the episcopate of Jean de Bernières and Philippe Le Boulenger. The building, damaged during the Hundred Years' War and the wars of religion, was restored several times, especially in the sixteenth century where the nave was shortened and foothills added. In the 18th century, its degraded state led to the partial closure and destruction of the central tower.

Restoration campaigns increased in the 19th and 20th centuries. The architect Victor Ruprich-Robert, disciple of Viollet-le-Duc, carried out major works between 1849 and 1869, rebuilding the choir and stabilizing the foundations. The arrows were restored in 1978, and the organ, installed in 1743, underwent several modernizations, including one by Cavaillé-Coll in 1881. The cathedral, marked by Norman and Franciscan influences, houses remarkable elements such as the rosaces of transepts, the 18th century stalls and the relics of Saint Latuin.

Ranked a historic monument in 1875, Notre-Dame de Sées Cathedral remains a major testimony to Gothic architecture in Normandy, combining medieval heritage and modern interventions. Its Latin cross plan, stained glass windows and sculptures, such as the beautiful God of Sées attributed to the Bernin workshop, make it a must-see place for heritage and spiritual. The last restorations, such as those of the bells in 2015, perpetuate its preservation.

The building also served as a cinematic decor, notably for Jeanne d'Arc by Luc Besson. Its organ, partially classified, and its annual festival attracts lovers of sacred music. The cathedral, despite the successive destructions and reconstructions, retains a remarkable stylistic unit, with more than half of its exterior walls dating back to the 19th century.
